The announcement comes four and a half years after Kerr joined the station’s primetime newscasts. He and his wife, Sheryl, plan to move to the Austin area after leaving Amarillo.
“It has been a wonderful four and a half years of being your primetime anchor at NewsChannel 10, but the time has come for me to say so long, but not goodbye,” Kerr wrote.
He said replacing longtime Panhandle TV fixture Walt Howard was one of the biggest challenges of his career, but called it an honor to help carry on the station’s tradition alongside chief meteorologist Dave Oliver. Kerr also recalled enjoying local restaurants, bike rides through Palo Duro Canyon and Amarillo’s summer evenings and sunsets.
“My career began as a sportscaster, transitioned to news and now I’m retiring from the industry,” Kerr wrote. “It’s been a run of 43 years, and I’ve been blessed to go to a job that I wanted to do each and every day.”
While Kerr is retiring from daily TV news, he is not stepping away entirely. In 2025, he launched the sports podcast Let’s Get Kerrific! and continues to create sports content on social media.
At NewsChannel 10, Kerr helped lead coverage of breaking news and severe weather while participating in community initiatives including the Together We Can Food Drive, 24 Hours in the Canyon and the Ronald McDonald House.
A graduate of the University of Central Oklahoma, Kerr began his TV career as a sports anchor at KLST in San Angelo in 1983. He spent the next several decades working in newsrooms across Texas, Illinois, Oklahoma and North Carolina, building a career primarily in sports broadcasting before later transitioning to news.
His stops included Austin’s KTBC, Beaumont’s KFDM, WICS in Springfield, Ill., KWTV in Oklahoma City and WFMY in Greensboro, N.C. He returned to Texas in 2010 to join FOX Sports Southwest in Dallas, where he anchored coverage of the Dallas Stars, Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs, among other programs.
In 2012, Kerr returned to KTBC in Austin as a morning news anchor, marking his shift from sports into full-time news. He later anchored morning newscasts in Beaumont and served as an anchor in San Angelo before joining KFDA in Amarillo in January 2022.
Throughout his career, Kerr earned numerous honors, including two Lone Star Emmy Awards—one for sports and one for news.
“Thank you Amarillo for all you have done for my wife Sheryl and me,” Kerr wrote in his farewell message. “You have made us feel like we were home.”
