A fire erupted Monday in southeast Houston, producing a large plume of smoke over the area and a response from emergency officials.
Fire units were dispatched to Mammoth Metal Recycling at 770 Kellogg St., according to the Houston Fire Department emergency radio. The fire was reported at 2:55 p.m.
Speaking to reporters near the fire, Houston Fire Chief Thomas Muñoz said no evacuations had been issued and no injuries were reported as of approximately 4 p.m.

“What I understand is it’s a pretty big field that goes a long way. We’re trying to get the estimates right now on how large exactly that is,” he said. “Like I said, a lot of tires are out there.”

Muñoz also said no nearby homes were believed to be at risk as of about 4 p.m.
Susan Martinez, who lives across the street from the fire, tells Houston Public Media she spotted the plume from the freeway on her way home.
“I have asthma, and I’m worried about the air quality and stuff, and I have a little daughter too, so that’s really concerning,” Martinez said.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TECQ) was actively monitoring the fire, according to Muñoz.
It was not immediately clear what specifically started the fire.
Speaking at a second 5 p.m. news conference, Muñoz said the department would likely be fighting the fire overnight and did not have an estimate for when it would be extinguished.
As of 5 p.m., approximately 100 firefighters were on scene, according to Muñoz.
