As World Cup festivities continue to take over North Texas, soccer fans looking to take a trip down memory lane can see Dallas’ history from the 1994 games right next to the FIFA Fan Fest.

The Dallas Historical Society, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Dallas and Texas, is showcasing historical documents and artifacts from the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the Hall of State at Fair Park.

The display highlights Dallas’ role in the 1994 FIFA World Cup, when the city used venues such as the Cotton Bowl stadium to host games and operations, according to the Dallas Historical Society. Fair Park also hosted the FIFA International Broadcast Center, which functioned as a hub for international press during the event. 

Among the items on display is an invitation to the 1994 FIFA World Cup Qualifying Draw Dinner that once belonged to Tom Landry, former coach of the Dallas Cowboys, according to the Dallas Historical Society. 

Visitors can also see informational pamphlets and game schedules, as well as materials documenting FIFA events and operations at Fair Park during the tournament. 

Karl Chiao, Dallas Historical Society’s Carona family executive director, said the organization maintains a collection of more than three million items.

Chiao said the organization will often rotate artifacts from its collection throughout the year, especially when major historical events, such as the World Cup, provide an opportunity to highlight related items. 

“We have all sorts of stuff that we come across,” Chiao said. “You just never know what you’re going to find.” 

Since World Cup festivities kicked off in North Texas, the museum has welcomed several soccer fans wearing jerseys, said Kaitlyn Price, curator of collections at the Dallas Historical Society. 

In addition to the World Cup display, visitors can also view a rare, original copy of the Declaration of Independence and other related historical documents at the Hall of State. 

Viewing the 1994 FIFA World Cup display case is free and open to the public. The Hall of State in Fair Park is located at 3939 Grand Ave., and is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
