Families who successfully reunited with their children after involvement in the foster care system were recognized Wednesday during a Reunification Month celebration at the Jefferson County Courthouse.
The event honored families participating in drug court programs who completed services and were reunited with children who had been placed in foster care.
County leaders said family reunification represents more than a homecoming.
“Family reunification is more than a homecoming; it is a powerful reminder that healing, growth, and change can happen,” organizers wrote in the event program.
The ceremony featured remarks from Judge Randy Shelton, Judge Larry Thorne and several community members and child welfare advocates. The program also included a proclamation, recognition of case managers and personal stories from families who navigated the reunification process.
Organizers said five families were recognized during Wednesday’s ceremony.
According to county officials, 68 local families have been reunified with their children during the current fiscal year.
The event was supported by several community organizations, including CASA of Southeast Texas and the Texas Family Care Network.
A second Reunification Day celebration is scheduled for Friday at 10:30 a.m. at First Methodist Church in Nederland. That event will honor families from Jefferson, Orange and Hardin counties who have successfully completed services and had their children returned to their care.
Organizers said the celebrations are intended to recognize the perseverance of parents and children who worked through challenges to rebuild their families.
“Their perseverance inspires us, and their story serves as a reminder that families can heal, reconnect, and thrive,” the program states.
