LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Fireworks stands opened for the Fourth of July season across Texas, and one local stand in Wolfforth is a fundraiser to help support a West Texas nonprofit.
Mr. W, located along the Brownfield Highway, is raising money for Reach Community. Founder and executive director Alisa Sisemore said proceeds from fireworks sales go to support the organization’s mission.
“My favorite line is that when you buy fireworks with us, it doesn’t all go up in smoke,” Sisemore said.
Sisemore said Reach stands for “reaching every adult, child, and home,” and described the group’s mission as “meeting people right where they are through authentic, consistent relationship.”
Reach Community works through programs including Come to the Table, as well as camps and conferences, Sisemore said. She said the organization focuses on reaching middle schoolers and young adults, but that can extend to helping entire families.
“But the whole thing about it is for us to listen to where each individual is. Where are you? What’s happening?” Sisemore said. “And so when you come to that table, you have that opportunity.”
This year, fireworks in Texas are on sale through July 5 because of a new state law tied to celebrating America’s 250th anniversary, according to the report. Sisemore said the fundraiser is also marking a milestone for Reach Community.
“This is our 10th year, by the way, our 10th year of doing this,” Sisemore said.
Sisemore said that over the past decade, support from the fireworks sales has helped change several lives, including one example of a student she gave.
“You wouldn’t have recognized him because he was so inward and so depressed and it was a pretty dark scene for him,” she said. “And as he came to the table, as he worked with us, and we worked with him and listened to him, if you had seen him at the end of the school year, his parents came to us and said, he’s not the same kid.”
