The segment began with Fallon raving about America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, whose latest season premiered June 16. Fallon asked Roots co-founder and band member Tariq Trotter (better known as Black Thought) if he had watched the show, and Trotter replied, “Yeah, it’s great. Hey, you know what would really be cool, Jimmy? If they just came here right now and performed.”
Fallon playfully dismissed the idea of the world-famous cheerleaders showing up out of the blue, before a woman in the audience stood up and said, “But what if it isn’t impossible, Jimmy?”
After some back-and-forth with more undercover squad members in the audience, they removed their outer layer of clothing to reveal the iconic cheerleading uniform. The squad then took the stage for a pom-pom-shaking dance set to the hip-hop song “Move Shake Drop.”
The cheerleaders aren’t strangers to The Tonight Show, with appearances in June and September of last year.
All seven episodes of the new season of America’s Sweethearts, which follows the 36-member squad’s audition process and explores the cheerleaders’ lives on and off the field, are streaming on Netflix.
