SAN ANTONIO — Across Texas, debates are happening about new names for streets, schools and buildings named after disgraced civil rights leader César Chávez.
In San Antonio, however, the answer seems pretty obvious.
Durango was the name of the street before it was changed to Cesar Chavez Boulevard in 2011. With the street’s name back in conversation now so is the cost. The City of San Antonio originally estimated it would cost $205,000 to change street signs and addresses, but recently said it could total about $300,000.
Elida Salas, who has lived on the street for 66 years, still believes it’s worth it.
“I want West Durango, just like all the neighbors around here,” she said.
