A Juárez woman has died at a hospital days after she was hit by a pickup truck on a crosswalk while shopping in Downtown El Paso, police said.
Ricarda Meza Escobedo, 71, was fatally injured in a video-recorded pedestrian collision on Oct. 24 that remains under investigation, El Paso Police Department spokesman Officer Adrian Cisneros stated in a news release on Monday, Nov. 3.

The El Paso County Medical Examiner’s Office notified police that Meza Escobedo had died of her injuries on Saturday, Nov. 1.

Meza Escobedo’s family told NMás (N+) news in Juárez that she was walking home after shopping. The collision occurred at 9:32 a.m. on Oct. 24 on Seventh Avenue and South Stanton Street by Mata’s Fruit Store, El Paso police reported.
Security camera video obtained by Telemundo Channel 48-KTDO shows Meza Escobedo pulling a small shopping cart as she walks across the street when a blue pickup turns left and strikes her.
The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado, driven by Monica Salas, 58, of Sunland Park, New Mexico, was southbound on Stanton when the truck made a left turn and hit Meza Escobedo, police stated.
No charges have been filed, but police noted the driver’s failure to yield the right of way to a pedestrian as a factor in the crash. An investigation continues.
October deadly for pedestrians
October is historically the most dangerous month for pedestrians in Texas, often due to reduced daylight. The Downtown crash was one of two fatal pedestrian crashes in El Paso within two days.
On the night of Oct. 26, Elena Alarcon, 84, and Adan Vasquez, 58, were crossing the street at a crosswalk when they were both hit by a pickup exiting a parking lot on George Dieter Drive in the East Side, police said. Alarcon died on Saturday, Nov. 1, at a hospital. That case is also still under investigation.

There have been 56 traffic-related deaths in El Paso this year compared with 57 at the same time last year, according to police numbers.
