Corpus Christi residents get another chance to pick up free sandbags

Corpus Christi is holding a second free sandbag giveaway as officials encourage residents to prepare early for hurricane season.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — With hurricane season already underway, Corpus Christi officials are urging residents to prepare now rather than wait for a storm to threaten the Coastal Bend.

To help with those preparations, the city will hold its second free sandbag distribution of the season on Saturday at the Cabaniss Athletic Complex.

The first giveaway attracted long lines of vehicles and exhausted the available supply before the event concluded, highlighting strong community interest in storm preparation resources.

Residents will be able to receive up to eight sandbags per vehicle while supplies last. Distribution is scheduled to run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., though city officials caution that sandbags may run out before the end of the event if demand is similar to the first giveaway.

Emergency management officials encourage residents to use the sandbags as part of a broader hurricane preparedness plan that includes reviewing evacuation routes, assembling emergency kits and monitoring weather conditions throughout the season.

The distribution will take place at the Cabaniss Athletic Complex, located along Saratoga Boulevard.

City leaders say preparing before a storm enters the Gulf can help families avoid last-minute rushes and ensure they have the supplies they need if severe weather threatens South Texas later this year.
