Canada will play in the FIFA World Cup round of 16 matchup in Houston on the Fourth of July after defeating South Africa on Sunday.
Stephen Eustáquio scored the game-winning goal for the Canadians in stoppage time to lift the team to a 1-0 win. It marks the first knockout stage win in the country’s history at a men’s World Cup.
Canada had finished in second place in Group B.
Sunday’s win for Canada also marked the return of Alphonso Davies, the team’s best player. The Bayern Munich star didn’t play at all during the group stage due to injury but came on as a substitute against South Africa in the 75th minute.
Houston’s next matchup takes place at noon Monday between Japan and Brazil. Brazil is led by superstar Vinícius Júnior, who scored four goals during the group stage.
