The Travis County Sheriff’s Office fielded a 9-1-1 call around 6:20 p.m. on Friday, June 26 regarding a man who had reportedly gone underwater in Lake Travis and hadn’t yet resurfaced. The caller directed lake patrol deputies to the main channel of Lake Travis near Bob Wentz Park, where the man had last been seen.
After an hourlong rescue attempt, crews shifted to a recovery mission, with the Texas Game Wardens, the Lower Colorado River Authority and Travis County Parks crews assisting the Travis County Lake Patrol in that effort. During the afternoon of Saturday, June 27, the Travis County Sheriff’s Office’s underwater camera system detected the missing swimmer’s body, with Texas Game Wardens divers recovering it that same afternoon.
In a press release on Monday, June 29, Travis County law enforcement officials said the identity of the swimmer won’t be released out of respect for their loved ones and due to there being “no indication this is a criminal incident.”
Ahead of the holiday weekend, with water levels healthy after recent heavy rainfall, officials warned visitors to take precaution when entering the lake.
“TCSO reminds patrons of Lake Travis that the best way to ensure your safety on the lake, or any other body of water, is to wear a life jacket,” officials noted in the release.
