The 36-year-old man allegedly hit Tony Vasquez around 2:50 a.m. near Cantrell Street and Cibola Drive, according to the man’s arrest warrant affidavit.
Witnesses reported seeing a black car, possibly a Honda, run over Vasquez twice before fleeing, Irving police said in the affidavit.
Vasquez was taken to a hospital in critical condition with various injuries, police said in the affidavit. Vasquez died June 20, according to the Dallas County medical examiner’s office.
A piece of the suspect’s front bumper helped police find the car, which was parked only one street away from the crash, according to the affidavit.
Officers located the driver as he was leaving his home and spoke with him. Police said in the affidavit that the suspect immediately began saying, “it was not his fault and that he did not mean to hit someone.”
The suspect told police that he and some friends were drinking while watching a FIFA soccer game, according to the affidavit. The man admitted to consuming four to six beers between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m., before driving someone to a hotel.
The suspect told police that while he was leaving the hotel, he hit something with his car, according to the affidavit. He said he did not know what it was, but later believed it was a person. The affidavit stated the suspect said he turned around and drove back through the scene. He did not see anything, but ran over something again, according to the affidavit.
The suspect went back to the hotel and then went home, according to the affidavit.
Police said in the affidavit that while talking with the suspect, he had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and his eyes were glassy.
The man was arrested and booked into the Dallas County jail. He faces several charges, including collision involving death, collision involving serious bodily injury, intoxication assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury and intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle.
His bond has been set at $350,000. It is unclear if he has an attorney.
