Commercial passenger flights have officially arrived in Collin County. Avelo Airlines has launched nonstop service from McKinney National Airport to five destinations, marking the airport’s transition from a general aviation facility to a commercial passenger airport for the first time in its history. The milestone establishes Avelo as Collin County’s hometown airline and represents a major step forward for one of North Texas’ fastest-growing regions.
The inaugural service follows years of planning and investment to bring commercial air travel closer to residents of Collin County and surrounding communities.
A New Era For McKinney National Airport
Avelo’s launch marks the first commercial airline service ever offered from McKinney National Airport, giving travelers a more convenient alternative to driving to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport or Dallas Love Field.
The airline’s initial schedule includes nonstop flights to five destinations:
Daytona Beach, Florida
Destin/Fort Walton Beach, Florida
Long Island/Islip, New York
Santa Rosa, California
Wilmington, Delaware (Philadelphia region)
The routes are designed to connect North Texans with popular leisure destinations while providing easier access for visitors traveling to Collin County.
Years In The Making
The launch builds on momentum that began earlier this year when Avelo announced plans to establish its first North Texas operating base at McKinney National Airport, becoming the airport’s inaugural commercial airline.
Avelo’s arrival is the latest milestone in McKinney National Airport’s transformation. Alongside the launch of commercial service, the airport is moving forward with its $79 million passenger terminal project, which will support future airline expansion with modern passenger amenities, expanded security screening and additional parking.
Building A Regional Gateway
The commercial launch represents far more than new flights. City leaders have long viewed commercial passenger service as an economic development catalyst capable of attracting new businesses, supporting tourism and providing greater convenience for one of the nation’s fastest-growing counties.
As anticipation for commercial service grew, the airport also worked to engage the community through public events. Earlier this year, Display Day invited residents behind the scenes to explore aircraft up close and learn more about the airport’s future before the first passenger flights officially took off.
Looking Ahead
While five nonstop destinations mark the beginning of commercial operations, airport officials view the launch as the foundation for future growth. As the new terminal nears completion and passenger demand increases, McKinney National Airport is expected to pursue additional airline partnerships and expanded route offerings, further strengthening its role as a transportation hub for Collin County.
