ARLINGTON — The World Cup match at Dallas Stadium had been over for several minutes, but thousands of Norway supporters and locals stayed in their seats.
Then came the drumbeat.
One by one, fans and players sat down and began the now famous “viking row,” moving their arms in unison as if rowing a longship across the sea. Within seconds the whole stadium was rocking back and forth, with players on the field mirroring the supporters in the stands after Norway’s 2-1 win over Ivory Coast.
Norway’s Martin Ødegaard led the masses, with a drum acquired from the stands, as his country celebrated moving on to the Round of 16.
Erling Haaland scored in the 86th minute to secure the victory and send Norway to a matchup against Brazil on July 5.
