LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Buffalo Springs Lake is preparing for its annual Fourth of July fireworks show, an event officials say draws thousands of visitors each year for food, family activities and a fireworks display.
Greg Thornton, general manager at Buffalo Springs Lake, said the event consistently brings in a large crowd and that safety remains a top priority.
“We doubled up on the police force, all of our officers will be on staff, all of our security will be on staff that day, all of our maintenance people, we will have a complete staff here, everybody is working that day,” Thornton said.
What to bring — and what to leave home
Thornton encouraged guests to arrive early and said the best viewing locations are in the lower canyon or the southeast corner of the lake past the dam. He also outlined what attendees should and should not bring.
“No personal fireworks, bring plenty of water, and drinks and food, we have the new marina but it will be crowded, but bring your supplies for the day, we don’t have a burn ban so we sell firewood here so you can have a campfire if you are staying for more than one day,” Thornton said. “And if you are just coming for the day, just bring drinks and footballs and fishing rods and all your lake stuff.”
A signature event for the lake
Tish Simmons with Buffalo Springs Lake said the annual fireworks show has become one of the lake’s defining events.
“It’s just kind of a trademark of the lake, you know, we always have our big annual firework show, it’s our biggest event of the year, we try to make it bigger and better every year and safe and fun for families to come out and have a good time, kids will never forget it,” Simmons said.
Simmons described the experience of the fireworks display itself.
“It’s just a really crazy feel, you can just feel the canyon, when the shells go off you can hear, you can just feel it in your chest, it’s pretty awesome,” Simmons said.
Where to get tickets
The fireworks show starts at 10 p.m. Pre-sale wristbands can be bought at the Buffalo Springs Lake Admin Office. You can also buy wristbands at Buffalo Springs Lake the night of the event.
