LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Neither Tim Green nor Gary Boren secured a majority of votes Saturday in the special election for Lubbock City Council District 4, sending the contest to a runoff.
Green received 47 percent of the vote, while Boren received 38 percent. The Lubbock City Council is set to canvass the election results within a week and consider a runoff date of Aug. 1.
Green focuses on growth, new revenue
Green, a homebuilder and former Lubbock firefighter, said because of the runoff, whoever wins the race is already missing out on important discussions.
“I’ll have to admit, I was a little disappointed that we didn’t reach the 50 percent threshold,” Green said. “I really want to get into the work sessions at the city and with the city budget and the work sessions going on now.”
Green said his background is in business and public safety, not politics, and that Lubbock’s growth requires someone who understands the development industry.
“I commend him for 40 years of service,” Green said of Boren. “But I think it’s time that we need a fresh perspective, somebody from the business community and especially the growth community. Lubbock is growing and we need somebody in there that understands that growth, that understands the, that knows the participants in the growth industry.”
Green said his main focus, while also examining city expenses, is generating new revenue.
“The current homeowners, we plant the seeds for the future and we build the infrastructure and roads,” Green said. “And that comes back and pays us back two times because then we get the Walmarts and the HEBs and that kind of thing.”
Boren emphasizes experience, budget efficiency
Boren said he was pleased the race is heading to a runoff, though he said a late start hurt his campaign.
“I was excited that we had a runoff,” Boren said. “You know, the probability was always very high. I was five weeks late because of the city hall, what they did, trying to keep me off the ballot. And that was an unfortunate hit I had to take.”
Boren has previously served on the Lubbock City Council in the early 2000s and on the Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees. He currently serves on the Brazos River Authority.
He said District 4 needs experienced leadership focused on government efficiency.
“We don’t need more builders, developers, or this or that,” Boren said. “We need experienced people that know how to get inside our government and get it efficient, make sure that it’s being cost effective to our citizens, get the cheapest delivery of services to them, what they need, and help build a tax base, so we can keep our taxes low.”
Boren said his priority is reducing the financial burden on homeowners.
“And I intend to get in there and make sure that if you’re a homeowner in District 4 and in Lubbock, I’m going to do everything I can to make sure you get to keep more of your money in your pocket and doesn’t go to City Hall,” Boren said.
