SAN ANTONIO, Texas (KFDA) – The Amarillo Sod Poodles dropped the opener of their series at San Antonio, falling to the Missions 6-2 on Tuesday night at Nelson Wolff Stadium.
The Sod Poodles and Missions played a scoreless first inning before San Antonio broke through in the second. A throwing error put a Mission on base to start the frame, and a pair of bunts from Braedon Karpathios and Ryan Jackson set the table for Albert Fabian, whose two-run single gave the hosts the lead.
Amarillo starter Adonys Perez kept the damage to a minimum, getting a ground ball double play to end the inning.
Missed opportunities leave Amarillo scoreless through six
The Sod Poodles went down in order in the third and could not find an answer in the fifth either, when Gavin Conticello singled and Alberto Barriga drew a walk to put two runners on with one out.
Back-to-back flyouts ended the threat, leaving Amarillo without a run through the first six innings.
San Antonio extended its lead to 4-0 in the fourth on solo home runs by Cunningham and Fabian, then pushed the advantage to 5-0 in the sixth when Fabian drove in his fourth run of the night on a double down the right field line.
Soddies scratch across two in seventh
Amarillo finally got on the board in the seventh inning.
Druw Jones and Conticello drew back-to-back one-out walks, and both moved into scoring position on a Barriga groundout.
The Sod Poodles scored both runs without the benefit of a hit, crossing the plate on a wild pitch and a balk to make it 5-2.
San Antonio responded in the eighth when Cunningham reached on a hit by pitch, stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch to push the lead back to four.
Amarillo went down in order in the ninth, closing out a 6-2 defeat.
