It’s not just summer that’s heating up in Texas.

The result? In a shocking twist, Texas went vegetarian with its answer, with grilled onions ranking supreme compared to all other options — yes, including the holy trinity of burgers, steaks and ribs.

“That’s part of a broader shift in how Americans use their grills,” the report read in part. “What was once primarily a tool for cooking burgers, steaks, and hot dogs is increasingly used for vegetables, fruit, and other foods as well.”

It was the only state to lock in grilled onions with a ringing endorsement, but it had some fellow veg-friendly company. Maine, Kansas, Nebraska, Rhode Island, Kentucky and Minnesota as well as Washington, D.C. accompanied Texas on its vegetarian spin, co-signing mushrooms, zucchini, peppers, green beans and eggplants as must-have grilling staples, the study revealed.

However, there was plenty of love for beef on the national scale when looking at countrywide trends. Burgers took the crown as the No. 1 top grilled food of interest nationally, while on an individual scale, steak rang in the largest number of endorsements via 18 states’ top placements.

As for the rising grill trends here in Texas? That nod goes to ribs, which were named the Lone Star State’s sizzling contender gaining momentum this summer season.
