Keith Mitchell, a member of Texas A&M’s “Wrecking Crew” defense in the 1990s has died, the school announced.
Mitchell, who played in high school at Garland Lakeview Centennial, played at A&M from 1993-96. He was 51.
The Aggies defense, dubbed the “Wrecking Crew,” helped A&M to the 1993 SWC championship and a 10-0-1 season in 1994.
Mitchell was inducted into the Texas A&M Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015. He ranks fourth in A&M history with 34.0 career sacks, and his 14.5 sacks in 1996 are sixth on the school’s single-season list.
He played seven seasons in the NFL from 1997-2003 with the New Orleans Saints, Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars. In his one season in Houston (2002), he played in 11 games and had 28 tackles and one sack.
The Mitchell family described his passing as “sudden and unexpectd.”
