LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A lifelong Texas Tech fan is facing a scheduling conflict, after ESPN’s College GameDay announced it would visit Lubbock for the Red Raiders game against BYU the day after his wedding in Dallas.
Taylor Karrh has been waiting for College GameDay to return to the Hub City for half his life, since he was 17 years old the last time the crew came to Raiderville.
“It’s a decade plus of not having a lot to cheer for. You know, the last time we were this good was ’08,” Karrh said.
The Red Raider fan scheduled his wedding to fiancée Rachael Lenhart for a Friday in Dallas, specifically to avoid conflicts with football season.
“Honestly, like it is a fall wedding. And that’s like the joke that’s going on X is that, you don’t book fall weddings, but we did book it for a Friday,” Karrh said.
Lenhart said she supported the Friday timing, coming from a big football family.
“I was hard for a fall wedding, but I was like, ‘I’m a football fan, too. I don’t want him and his buddies to be on their phone, you know, so I was like, for sure, not a Saturday, let’s do a Friday,’” Lenhart said.
The couple never anticipated College GameDay would visit Lubbock the Saturday after their Friday wedding, creating a logistical challenge.
“I don’t think we’re going to be in very good shape to make a drive to Lubbock first thing Saturday morning. So it’s just, it’s very hard to get there,” Karrh said.
Karrh poked some fun at his wife on X about the dilemma, getting 13,000 likes.
“And I just, sarcastically asked her like, ‘how many retweets to move it?’ And she’s like, ‘I’m not even giving an answer,’” Karrh said.
Lenhart eventually set the bar at one million retweets. Karrh’s follow-up post received nearly 3,000 reposts and caught the attention of major accounts, including ESPN’s Holly Rowe, who offered to officiate the wedding.
“That’s when people really started, I mean, some really big accounts retweeted it and like Holly Rowe quote tweeted it and offered to be our officiant. And so it just took a life of its own after that,” Karrh said.
Lenhart said the responses ranged from being critical of either her or Karrh, but she couldn’t help but laugh.
“Get out now, like she’s gonna control you for the rest of your life. And then there was some people that were like, it’s just a football game, like record the TV,” Lenhart said.
Karrh praised his fiancée’s reaction to the attention.
“She’s been a good sport about it. And that’s one of the reasons, you know, why I’m going to marry her is because she, she gets it. She’s a sports fan, too. And so she could take it,” Karrh said.
The couple plans to watch the game with family and friends at a Dallas bar. They remain open to other possibilities, though, like the offer of being flown to Lubbock on a private jet.
“My family’s like, well, if they sent a jet Saturday, like, would you go? And I was like, okay, guys, like, I don’t think that’s going to happen. And Taylor’s like, well, Pat Mahomes might be there Friday. Like, maybe he’ll come crash the wedding,” Lenhart said.
Karrh said he’s saving his requests for potentially bigger games this season.
“We are expecting bigger games this year, so we will, I’ll put those in my back pocket,” Karrh said.
