A group of British travelers have embarked on a Texas roadtrip, and their reactions to some things that Texans may take for granted are going viral. The TikTok creator and ghost hunter by the name of Adam Oakley kicked off the trip with a visit to San Antonio last week, and of course he and his “British young chaps” had to stop by the Alamo first.
While many San Antonians have seen the Alamo countless times, it seems like Oakley and his travel mates were surprised by the popular historic site. They called the complex “sick” and remarked at the “fancy” buildings nearby.
“We don’t get none of this in London, do we?” Oakley said. “America, you’ve got to stop gatekeeping these kind of places, because it is honestly absolutely beautiful. “
The trip didn’t stop there. After visiting San Antonio, Oakley and his friends stopped by Yorktown, Texas (about an hour and a half southeast of the city and known for its famously haunted Yorktown Memorial Hospital) and continued on to Austin. Commenters noticed that by Day 3 of the road trip, the travelers were looking like they may need some sunscreen and water — but that didn’t stop them from cheering on England from a World Cup watch party at Woody’s.
While in Austin, Oakley signed his friend up for a belly flop competition at half time, and also spotted one of the most Texan sights imaginable — police officers riding on horseback. “That’s aura,” the tourists said.
“That’s another reason why America is fuc*ing brilliant,” Oakley exclaimed, continuing to say that “Austin so far has been sick,” as well as calling Texan and American hospitality “class.” He also said that they’d be visiting 6th Street that night, which is basically a canon event.
On Day 4, Oakley noticed something about Austin that may have Texans thinking he’s “absolutely crackers.”
“Even your alleyways are cool as fu*k,” he said. “Look at that — it’s like a movie. It’s like a fuc*ing movie, bruv.” His appreciation for the mundane had one commenter saying, “I love yalls reactions to every day things here.”
Lastly, they tried some Texas barbecue on their final night in the Lone Star State. Heading into Terry Black’s BBQ, Oakley was blown away by the size of the pits, comparing them to submarines. He went for some mac and cheese and brisket, and the only thing he could say after taking a bite was “God bless America, God bless your food, and God bless the state of Texas. Unreal. Banging.”
As the trip came to an end, Oakley posted a heartfelt “thank you” to the people of Texas and everyone they met along their trip for making him feel like one of our own. “Southern hospitality has been phenomenal from San Antonio, Yorktown, Austin. We truly have had the best time and you guys have made our trip even better.”
