Joe McCoy, who has spent the past two years at Minneapolis station KARE 11, is heading south to join KTRK. McCoy announced the move on social media Thursday.
“My next chapter will be in Houston, Texas, reporting at KTRK, the ABC-owned station there,” McCoy wrote. “I am very grateful and excited for this opportunity, and I look forward to calling Houston my new home.”
Chron has reached out to McCoy and ABC13 for comment.
McCoy joined KARE 11 in July 2024. Before moving to Minneapolis, he worked at WQAD News 8, the TEGNA-owned station serving the Quad Cities, as a multimedia journalist and weekend anchor. He first joined WQAD as an intern in 2022 before being hired full time in January 2023, covering communities across eastern Iowa and western Illinois.
An Augustana College graduate, McCoy studied journalism and economics and built much of his early broadcasting experience in sports. He worked as a sports broadcaster, hosted a weekly football radio show focused on NFL analysis and called high school football and basketball games for QCSportsNet. He also interned as a reporter for WVIK, Quad Cities NPR.
McCoy is the third reporter to join ABC13 this year. The station added Tony Atkins in March after his time at WESH 2 News, the NBC affiliate in Orlando. KTRK also welcomed Kelvin Henry in January following more than four years as a general assignment reporter at NBC 7 San Diego.
The latest hire comes weeks after ABC13 bid farewell to longtime anchor Jeff Ehling, who retired in June after 26 years in Houston and four decades in television news.
