The Texas Department of Transportation’s Austin District office announced varying overnight closures are slated along I-35 in South Austin this week, according to a social media post shared on Sunday, July 5. Those upcoming closures apply to both northbound and southbound I-35, TxDOT added, with the closure boundaries running from State Highway 71 and Ben White Boulevard down to William Cannon Drive.
The varying lane closures will kick off on Monday, July 6 and are expected to continue through to Thursday, July 9, TxDOT officials noted. As a result, through-lane traffic will be impacted during the construction period running from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night, with some segments of the interstate reduced to one lane only.
The closures come as part of ongoing work on the I-35 Capital Express South Project, which began construction work in November 2022 and is tentatively expected to wrap sometime in late 2028, TxDOT documents confirmed.
Upon completion, the estimated $548 million project — running between Ben White Boulevard and State Highway 45 Southeast — will have added two high-occupancy-vehicle (HOV) lanes in both directions along I-35 as well as raised the HOV lanes between State Highway 71 and Ben White Boulevard and Slaughter Lane. The project also entails the creation of a southbound I-35 intersection bypass lane, designed to allow traffic to bypass both Stassney Lane and William Cannon Drive. Other elements include enhanced east and west connections both above and below the interstate as well as roughly 13 new miles of shared-use paths along the corridor.
