ANTHONY, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — El Paso boxer Kayla Gomez was arrested Saturday after Anthony police say she allegedly assaulted a family member during a family gathering.
According to the Anthony Police Department, officers responded to the 600 block of Celeste in Anthony shortly after receiving a report of a domestic disturbance. Investigators said Gomez became involved in an argument with a family member that escalated into a physical altercation.
Police say Gomez allegedly struck the victim multiple times, causing visible injuries. The victim was evaluated by emergency medical personnel at the scene but declined transportation to a hospital.
Based on the investigation, Gomez was arrested on a charge of Assault Causing Bodily Injury – Family Violence and booked into the El Paso County Jail on a $2,500 bond.
According to El Paso County Jail Records, Gomez was released on July 5 with surety bond posted.
Gomez is one of El Paso’s most accomplished young boxers. She qualified for the U.S. Olympic boxing team in 2021, was honored with a City of El Paso proclamation declaring May 24 as Kayla Gomez Day in 2022, and recently made her professional boxing debut after taking time away from the sport following the birth of her child.
Gomez commented on our Instagram post saying: “There are two sides to every story, and I didn’t hit anybody. Also, she wasn’t family, that was a crazy step-aunt who attacked me with my baby in my arms on her birthday.”
