On Wednesday, KPRC 2 reporter Jaewon Jung shared a screenshot of a racist message she recently received from a user named Chance Love.
“It’s 2026 and I still get DMs like this,” Jung wrote. “If you choose to be racist, I will expose you and I will block you. Thanks so much.”
In the screenshot, Love asks Jung, “Are you a Chinese spy too?” before sending another message that reads, “Ching Chong bing bong.”
Jung told Chron she believes publicly calling out the behavior is a matter of accountability.
“Too often, people send messages like this without a second thought or any sense of accountability,” Jung said. “I work in a profession centered on holding people accountable, and I believe those who engage in blatant racism should be called out for it.”
The message was far from an isolated incident. Jung shared several other racist messages she has received from viewers in the past. One made an accusation involving her family and illegal prostitution parlors in Houston. Another called her a “CCP agent embedded as a reporter,” while a third read, “You in Jwong place girl.”
Jung said Asian American journalists, particularly women, already face unique challenges in an industry where many feel they must work twice as hard to earn the same recognition and credibility.
“Then, on top of that, we receive messages like these simply because of our race,” Jung said. “That takes a real toll over time.”
By sharing the messages, Jung hopes others reconsider similar behavior before hitting send.
“I hope by sharing these messages people think twice before engaging in this type of behavior,” she said.
Jung is the second Houston TV news figure in a matter of days to publicly confront racist comments from viewers. Last week, ABC13 anchor Erica Simon called out a viewer who compared her to a monkey in a comment left under a Facebook post celebrating her mother’s birthday.
Jung, an Emmy Award-winning journalist, joined Houston’s NBC affiliate in February 2025. She previously worked as a weekend anchor and senior reporter at KTNV Channel 13 in Las Vegas.
