A 28-year-old man from Princeton, Indiana, was killed early Monday in a single-vehicle rollover crash on U.S. Highway 287 about two miles east of Washburn, Texas, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Troopers said the crash happened around 6:20 a.m. Nov. 3 when a 2008 Ford Fusion driven by Jordan Wampler was headed east on U.S. 287. For an unknown reason, Wampler braked sharply and swerved, causing the vehicle to enter a side skid, leave the roadway and roll over several times.

Wampler, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle. He was taken to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo, where he later died from his injuries.

The crash occurred on a stretch of U.S. 287 near Washburn, a small rural community in Armstrong County located about 20 miles southeast of Amarillo and roughly 10 miles northwest of Claude. The area is surrounded by open ranchland and serves as a key route between the Panhandle and North Texas.

Conditions were clear and dry at the time of the crash, and the posted speed limit in the area is 75 mph.

The crash remains under investigation by the Texas Highway Patrol.
