An artist will have the chance to have their artwork permanently showcased for the Plano community. The City of Plano is seeking an artist or artist-led team to design and create a permanent artwork to mark the entrance to the Historic Downtown Plano Arts District. It will sit at the corner of G Avenue and 15th Street, serving as a landmark for the district. The winner will receive an all-inclusive, $125,000 commission. It will cover design, materials, fabrication, travel, insurance, shipping, and installation.
Tho artwork will draw on the character of Downtown Plano’s historic period, 1890 to 1936, through its form, materials and detailing; however, it does not need to imitate historic design, and creative, contemporary approaches are welcome. The piece must permanently include the words Heritage, Arts District and Downtown Plano.
“This artwork will be one of the first things people see when they enter the district,” said Michelle Hawkins, Downtown Plano manager. “We want a piece that reflects the history and spirit of Downtown Plano and gives the arts district a landmark of its own.”
The selection of the winning artist will happen in two phases. In Phase 1, artists nationwide can submit work samples, a resume, a bio and a letter of interest by July 27. Next, in Phase 2, a selection committee will invite three to five finalists to visit the location and create a site-specific design proposal. Finalists receive $1,000 to cover travel and their proposal.
