EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) —The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office conducted its “Operation Slow Down”, a six-day high-visibility traffic enforcement initiative along Transmountain in response to dangerous speeding patterns.
Officials stated the operation focused on reducing dangerous driving behaviors by increasing traffic enforcement and having a visible law enforcement presence.
No motor vehicle crashes were reported in the targeted area during the six-day campaign. During the operation, deputies conducted 292 traffic stops and issued 265 citations and 77 written warnings.
The sheriff’s office reported that enforcement activity included:
27 citations for failure to maintain financial responsibility (no insurance)
16 driver’s license violation citations
12 registration violation citations
2 citations for failure to vacate a lane for an emergency vehicle
1 citation for an unrestrained child
2 possession of THC/marijuana reports
2 traffic warrant referrals to Justice of the Peace Precinct 7
Officials reported that deputies averaged around 48 traffic stops and issued 44 citations per day.
“Our goal is not to issue citations, it’s to save lives,” said Sheriff Oscar Ugarte. “When drivers see deputies out enforcing traffic laws, they’re reminded to slow down and make safer choices behind the wheel. We were encouraged to see that no crashes were reported in the targeted area during this operation, and we’ll continue conducting proactive enforcement efforts to help keep our roads safe.”
