The commission will create a permanent gateway welcoming visitors to Historic Downtown Plano

The city of Plano is searching for an artist to create a new landmark for one of the city’s most recognizable destinations. Officials have opened a nationwide call for artists to design and fabricate a permanent public artwork that will serve as the gateway to the Historic Downtown Plano Arts District.

The commissioned piece will be installed at the northeast corner of G Avenue and 15th Street, creating a visual landmark that welcomes visitors both day and night.

The selected artist or artist-led team will receive an all-inclusive $125,000 commission covering design, materials, fabrication, shipping, travel and installation.

Celebrating Downtown Plano’s History

Rather than replicating historic architecture, the city is encouraging artists to create a contemporary work inspired by Downtown Plano’s formative years between 1890 and 1936.

The finished piece must permanently incorporate the words “Heritage,” “Arts District” and “Downtown Plano,” while reflecting the character and identity of one of Plano’s oldest neighborhoods.

The project is intended to create a recognizable entrance that reinforces the district’s role as a cultural destination while honoring its rich history.

Two-Phase Selection Process

The competition will take place in two stages.

During Phase One, artists must submit:

Work samples
Resume
Artist biography
Letter of interest

Submissions are due by July 27.

A selection committee will then invite three to five finalists to visit Plano and develop site-specific proposals. Each finalist will receive a $1,000 honorarium to help offset travel expenses and proposal development.

Creating A New Downtown Landmark

“This artwork will be one of the first things people see when they enter the district,” said Downtown Plano Manager Michelle Hawkins. “We want a piece that reflects the history and spirit of Downtown Plano and gives the arts district a landmark of its own.”
