LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A new grant is allowing the YWCA in Lubbock to bring National Fatherhood Initiative resources to fathers and father figures in the city.
The National Fatherhood Initiative launched in 1994 to give dads resources to be better parents and strengthen families. The YWCA, which has operated in Lubbock since 1956, received a grant through the Health and Human Services Commission in May to fund the local program.
The Fatherhood Initiative is a 12-week program designed to support dads with practical tools, parenting strategies and community connection with other parents. The program began this week, and fathers are still welcome to join every Tuesday night at the YWCA.
YWCA Chief Financial Officer Shane Moran said the program will give fathers a chance to thrive in Lubbock.
“When dads are here, we get to know them, get to know their stories and their children,” Moran said. “We can see what it is they may need to be better fathers. Whether their single fathers or if they’re married, whatever their situation is, we can walk along with them and help provide the access to those services.”
Moran said he understands firsthand the value of having support as a new father.
“I have six children that were adopted through foster care, and when I started that journey, there’s not a manual and you kind of just learn from what you’ve seen,” Moran said. “If you haven’t been raised in the best situation, you may need that assistance.”
Moran said the YWCA is focused on the broader impact the program can have on the community.
“The biggest thing we look at is impact, so with these funds that are available with the program, what impact can we make, ultimately, for the community and the children we’re trying to serve?” Moran said.
