A flash flood warning has been issued for parts of the San Antonio metro area on Saturday, the National Weather Service announced. The warning will stay in effect until at least 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
Areas affected include the northwestern sections of the metro area, including Leon Valley, Helotes, Fair Oaks Ranch, Leon Springs, Shavano Park, and the Dominion. Central, southern, and eastern parts of San Antonio are not included in the flash flood warning.
As of 1:50 p.m., a cluster of strong thunderstorms is moving through northwestern Bexar County, where 1 to 3 inches of rain has already fallen. Up to 2 inches of additional rainfall is possible over the next couple of hours, leading to flash flooding.
According to the National Weather Service, life threatening flash flooding is possible across creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses. Travel is not recommended across the warned area.
Additional rainfall is developing to the south of Bexar County, and it is expected to continue northward through the late afternoon. Rain chances are expected to continue through the later afternoon and into the evening. Storm chances will decrease significantly after 7 p.m.
