Torrential rain in the San Antonio area on Saturday afternoon has left thousands of residents without electricity.
According to CPS Energy’s outage map, 77 active outages were affecting 15,543 customers across its service area as of 3 p.m. Saturday, July 11.
Outages were scattered across the western half of the region from Lytle to Fair Oaks Ranch, but the city’s Eastside was not spared as a flash flood warning lingers in the area through 6 p.m. bringing torrential downpours.
CPS Energy shared an update as storms entered the region, saying “The @NWSSanAntonio is reporting ‘intense rainfall rates of 1-3 [inches] per hour is possible in the heaviest storms, particularly in western Bexar County right now where a Flash Flood Warning is in place until 6pm. Avoid flooded roads and slow down. Turn around, don’t drown.'”
At around 1:05 p.m. the power company noted “30 active weather-related outages affecting approx. 186 customers, with the largest outages in the 78240 and 78015 zip codes.”
They also shared an update on restoration, “Please know our crews will continue to focus on working safely today & delays in restoration time are possible due to weather conditions.”
The National Weather Service forecasts a 90% chance of rain through the day before conditions gradually improve later in the evening with another 60 percent chance of rain for tonight with a slight chance of thunderstorms.
Rain chances continue into early parts of next week with a 20 percent chance on Monday and a 60 percent chance on Tuesday.
Turn around, don’t drown
High water is visible on Loop 1604 and West Military Drive causing a 5-minute delay and a backup up to Dove Canyon.
