A Texas bakery is attracting national attention — and apparently a wave of new customers — after a viral post in which its owner expressed embarrassment about the state of the country.
Hive Bakery in Flower Mound posted on its Facebook page that it was “not wanting to celebrate the 4th this year” on July 3, stating that “we’re embarrassed, afraid, and disappointed in what this country has become.”
“MAGA is adversarial,” the post added, saying it would remain open on the holiday. “Those conservatives who still have rational thought have left the MAGA movement. Those who remain and continue to support the most corrupt administration in our nation’s history are here, wishing for our bakery to burn to the ground.”
The bakery said it had sold out of “Distress Sugar Cookies,” which featured an upside-down American flag with the words “Under Distress.”
Since the national recognition, the bakery has repeatedly sold out of sweet treats and online apparel, according to its social media posts. Hive Bakery has also gained 15,000 new followers on Facebook, 10,000 on TikTok, and 8,000 on Instagram, the bakery’s owner, Haley, shared.
“We’ve been SLAMMED today and baking all afternoon to accommodate the demand. Thanks so much, guys!!!” the bakery posted on July 8.
Reaction to the owner’s sentiments have been mixed on social media.
One comment read, “I completely respect your right to your opinions, and I know we all want what’s best for our country, even if we disagree on how to get there. But reading this post made me sad. The anger and contempt toward Americans who hold different political views only seem to deepen the division in our country.”
“Yes but also bashing conservatives and attacking them isn’t gonna fix the system. It isn’t gonna change anything. If you want real systemic change, we need to stop attacking and work together,” another person wrote.
Meanwhile, many applauded the owner for speaking out, with one comment saying, “Like so many other people, I’m right there with you!! Thank you for being a beacon of light in these dark times. And bringing humor and deliciousness!!”
USA TODAY reached out to Hive Bakery for comment but has not heard back as of yet.
