The Comerica lettering that clung near the top of a Dallas skyscraper is coming down.
With little fanfare, branding for the bank was removed from parts of the 60-story Comerica Bank Tower in recent days. It’s unclear when the work began, but social media posts said some letters were gone by Friday afternoon.
As of Monday morning, only the side of the building facing Ervay Street still had Comerica branding attached near the tower’s top. Crews weren’t seen working on the high-rise, and other Comerica branding around the property remained.
Fifth Third and building owner Slate Asset Management declined to answer questions about the sign removal and related topics.
The move was expected. Comerica was acquired by Fifth Third Bancorp earlier this year, and Fifth Third leaders said in May that the Ohio-based bank would leave Comerica Bank Tower in the coming months. Fifth Third plans to take multiple floors at 8300 Douglas, a mixed-use development in Preston Center owned by Ramrock and developed by Lincoln Property Co. The project will feature a 12-story office building and a 17-story residential tower.
It’s unclear whether bank employees are still based at the downtown skyscraper. Fifth Third’s lease in the tower at 1717 Main St. runs through 2028. The property is 68% leased. Once Fifth Third leaves, the tower’s occupancy may drop to 57%, according to data from real estate firm CoStar.
Comerica Bank Tower is Dallas’ third-tallest building. Comerica made the building its headquarters after moving from Detroit to Dallas in 2007.
Toronto-based Slate Asset Management acquired the skyscraper in 2024, and the Canadian owners pitched an ambitious redevelopment plan that would convert portions of the roughly 1.5-million-square-foot office tower into a 242-room hotel and 240 residential units. The plan also calls for a new 437-space parking garage to replace a landscaped plaza and banking hall.
