LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The city of Lubbock is observing the 25th anniversary of the death of Police Sergeant Kevin Cox, who was accidentally shot and killed during a SWAT standoff on July 13, 2001.
The incident began as a domestic dispute at a home near 87th Street and Geneva Avenue around 11 a.m. Officers said the husband refused to come out of the house. Cox was killed by friendly fire during the standoff.
Cox had served with the Lubbock Police Department for 16 years at the time of his death.
Following Cox’s line-of-duty death, the department’s SWAT team underwent several changes, including additional training, increased funding, and upgraded armored vehicles.
The team went on to win statewide and national championships after those changes were made. Those who knew Cox said the accomplishments would make him proud.
