Widely scattered thunderstorms have arrived in parts of South and Southwest Texas, and they’re already starting to produce significant flooding.
A flash flood warning has been issued for northwestern parts of the San Antonio metro area, including Leon Valley, Castle Hills, Hollywood Park, Helotes, and Shavano Park. Up to 3 inches of rain has already fallen in this area, and another inch to 2 inches of rain is likely. The flash flood warning is scheduled to continue until 12:45 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service, life threatening flash flooding is possible across creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses. Travel is not recommended in the warning area.
The region’s heaviest rain is located over Uvalde and western Medina counties, and a flash flood warning is in place for these locations, lasting into Wednesday afternoon. Parts of north-central Uvalde County have received 6 inches of rain overnight and up to 18 inches of rain in the past 24 hours.
Cities such as Hondo, D’Hanis, Sabinal, Knippa, Uvalde, and Utopia are included the flash flood warning. Travel is highly discouraged throughout the morning hours as torrential rainfall continues.
Parts of souther Edwards, Real, and Bandera counties are also under a flash flood warning, including the communities of Vanderpool, Leakey, and Camp Wood.
Eastern Kerr County and western Gillespie County — including Kerrville and Fredericksburg — are under a flash flood warning until at least 10 a.m. Wednesday. Multiple inches of rain fell in this area overnight, and an additional couple inches will be possible.
As of 8:15 a.m. Wednesday, Central and Southern parts of San Antonio is not yet under a flash flood warning. However, rainfall is starting to become more prevalent in the area, and isolated heavy rain may still lead to minor or urban street flooding through the morning hours. A flash flood warning may be needed later as more rain develops over t he next six hours.
The San Antonio area is likely to see between 1 and 4 inches of rain on Wednesday, with isolated higher totals over 6 inches possible.
