GARLAND, Texas — The City of Garland is warning local residents to keep their doors shut against potential scammers posing as city or utility employees.
In a social media alert, officials urged Garland Water Utility customers to “stay on high alert for criminals posing as utility or City employees.”
According to the city, impostors may attempt to gain entry into homes under false pretenses. Officials emphasize that city utility workers will never ask to enter a residence unless a prior appointment has been scheduled. Furthermore, “home inspections are NOT part of Garland Water Utilities’ operations.”
To help North Texans distinguish between real city staff and potential scammers, the city shared several common tactics used by impostors:
Asking to test water quality or water pressure.
Claiming a resident is owed a cash refund. Officials noted that “the City never gives cash refunds.”
Posing as city staff without presenting any proper identification.
The city stressed that legitimate employees will always wear official uniforms, carry photo identification cards, and drive clearly marked City of Garland vehicles.
“WHEN IN DOUBT — DON’T OPEN THE DOOR,” the city warned. “Verify before you trust!”
