The suspected gunman has been identified as 20-year-old Kaden Ausbrooks, according to Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman. Ausbrooks remains hospitalized under the supervision of Precinct 4 deputies and is expected to be booked into the Harris County Jail after his release.
Authorities said Ausbrooks was one of two people injured in the shooting, which officials told Chron appeared to be self-inflicted. The second victim, whose identity has not been released, remains hospitalized and was last reported to be in stable but serious condition.
The shooting unfolded shortly after 2:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Kroger located at 20355 Cypresswood Drive, where Precinct 4 deputies responded to reports of an active shooter inside the store.
Officers said they got to the scene “in under two minutes and quickly took the suspect into custody as he was exiting the store.”
Ausbrooks has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury, a first-degree felony.
Authorities have not shared the motive behind the shooting and declined to disclose any additional information to Chron.
“We are grateful that no additional individuals were injured during this incident,” Constable Mark Herman said in a public statement. “The rapid response of our deputies, along with the assistance of our partner law enforcement agencies, allowed officers to quickly secure the scene, provide access to emergency medical care for those injured, and conduct the investigation necessary to file charges against the alleged shooter.”
