LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Governor Abbott said Thursday afternoon two people have died in the ongoing major flooding across the Hill Country and South Central Texas.
During the news conference in Austin, Abbott said one person died near Comfort and another in Uvalde.
Abbott said more than 230 rescues have been completed, saving people from the flood waters.
The torrential rain has fallen across much of the region, with flash flood warnings still in effect for some areas. Abbott said the rainfall has been “record-shattering, that leads to very dangerous flooding.”
The governor said the Nueces river near Uvalde is forecast to crest at a new record high, eclipsing the mark from 1996. The Frio near Uvalde is projected to reach a top-five recorded crest, as is the Pedernales River near Johnston City. Abbott said the Guadalupe at Comfort is projected to reach a top-three mark.
Because roads and highways are flooding, Abbott said Uvalde is effectively cut off. He said state resources have 500,000 MREs, meals ready to eat, and 1 million bottles of water, to be delivered to people in and near Uvalde.
