CHEYENNE – Rising junior pitcher Brenden Romero allowed just three hits and three walks in five innings of work to help the Cheyenne Sixers pick up an 8-2 win over Washington’s En Fuego.
Center fielder Zach Hall notched two of Cheyenne’s five total hits in the game, finishing with a single, double and two RBI. Asher Nuland and Brayden Kamarad added hits for the Sixers, as well.
The Sixers advanced to the championship game at 4:30 today, but have elected to skip it to return to Cheyenne to prepare for the Wyoming Class AA state tournament, which begins Friday in Gillette.
Hawks pick up conference sweep at Green River
CHEYENNE – The Cheyenne Hawks overcame a 9-3 deficit going into the fifth inning, outscoring Green River 12-1 over the final four innings to pick up a 15-10 win in the first half of the doubleheader.
The Hawks scored a three consecutive of runs off walks with the bases loaded before a throwing error scored Than Hardy and Kellin Wenzel to cut the lead to one. Cheyenne rattled off four more runs in the next inning to take a lead it wouldn’t surrender the rest of the way.
Left fielder Chase Aragon led the Hawks from the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Alex Vines and Nolan Gorman added a pair of hits apiece.
Cheyenne took the second game 5-2. It trailed 1-0 after three innings, but pushed across three runs across in the fourth and two more in the sixth.
Hardy and Vines were both 2-for-3. Vines had a double, as did Gorman and Ryder Mitchell.
Troy Nelson picked up the win by pitching 4⅔ innings, scattering seven hits and giving up two runs (none earned). Damien Harwell picked up the save by tossing 2⅓ innings of one-hit relief.
