The Dallas Wings held on to extend their winning streak on Sunday to six games and remain unbeaten in July after defeating the Los Angeles Sparks 90-82 at College Park Center in Arlington. Six games is the longest winning streak in franchise history.

The Wings were in control of the game from the beginning, and were backed by a strong performance by Wings guard Paige Bueckers, who had 25 points in the win before she left with an apparent head injury late in the fourth quarter. Bueckers did not return against the Sparks.

“I don’t have an update, I know she was being evaluated. I went back to see her, she’s seeing our doctors and we’ll probably know more in the next couple of hours,” Wings coach Jose Fernandez said.

Here are three takeaways from Sunday’s win.

Paige Bueckers was in MVP form

Bueckers has been carrying her weight for the Wings this season. Bueckers is averaging 23.6 points, 7.4 assists and 5.8 rebounds during the Wings’ winning streak.

Bueckers is also the reigning WNBA Western Conference Player of the Week from July 2-12, marking the first time she’s been selected for the award.

Sitting at second on Yahoo Sports’ MVP ladder, Bueckers is just behind Las Vegas Aces’ forward A’ja Wilson, who is the reigning MVP.

Bueckers was selected as an All-Star captain for this year’s All-Star game on July 25 in Chicago. She’ll be leading team Coop in the game and her teammate, Wings’ forward Jessica Sheppard, will be on team Spoon who is led by Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark.

Bueckers exited the game against the Sparks after going down down holding her head following a collision with a Sparks player. The severity of the injury is currently unknown.

Wings have to protect the glass

Despite holding the Sparks to shooting just 30% from three, the Wings still had to scrape by. The Sparks shot just under 50% from the field, keeping the game close.

The Wings were getting out rebounded by the Sparks on Sunday’s game, an uncommon occurrence in a Wings win.

The Sparks were able to continue to maintain control of the glass throughout the game, but the insertion of Wings center Li Yueru helped disrupt the Sparks’ momentum.

The Sparks weren’t able to get easy layups and inside looks with Yueru in the paint. Yueru added four points and four rebounds in just nine minutes and helped flip the rebounding back in the Wings favor.

Arike Ogunbowale is back to her normal scoring

Wings guard Arike Ogunbowale had a rough stretch in scoring from June 22 to July 7, where she was averaging under 10 points a game in that stretch.

Ogunbowale is back to her high scoring self, putting up a 20 point, 17 point and a 20 point performance in the past three games.

“Just getting downhill, doing whatever the team needs, and it’s been getting downhill, so that’s what I’m trying to do,” Ogunbowale said.

When Ogunbowale is knocking down her shots, the attention is not all on Bueckers, allowing her to get more open looks.

“I think Arike was really assertive down the stretch. Getting to the basket was big. I thought she was efficient today was well,” Coach Fernandez said.

The Wings have just two more games until the All-Star game, playing the New York Liberty on Monday night, a makeup from Friday after the Liberty’s charter plane had mechanical issues. The Wings will then travel to Portland to play the Fire on Wednesday.

Fans tickets will still be honored after Friday’s game got postponed, with tip off being at 7:00 p.m. marking the first back-to-back game the Wings have played this season.
