Few residents attended a June 22 virtual public meeting about upcoming pedestrian improvements near A.M. Pate Elementary School.
The meeting began five minutes late to give residents more time to join. Residents asked about erosion control, pedestrian safety and accessibility.
The Safe Routes to School project will add sidewalks, curb ramps, driveways, signs, curbs and gutters within about a quarter-mile of the school. The $3.3 million project, funded through the city’s 2022 bond program, is in Fort Worth’s Council District 11.
Construction will affect Virgil Street, Mountcastle Drive, Lois Street and Freshfield Road.
Residents will receive door hangers and official letters of notice seven days before construction begins, which was scheduled for July 13.
The project is expected to take 240 calendar days, with completion anticipated around March 2027.

Jenna Henderson, the city’s project manager, said crews will use temporary traffic control and remove debris from the workside daily. No full street closure or detours are expected, although temporary lane changes and parking restrictions may occur, she said.
Crews will try to maintain access to homes and driveways, but some residents could face brief disruptions, said Will Johnson, project manager at XIT Paving and Construction Inc.
