The local drop in gas prices reflects state and national dynamics.
State gas prices declined last week and reached an average of $2.724 per gallon of regular fuel on Oct. 6 after rising about 7.7 cents from $2.647 per gallon on Sept. 29, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
The national average price of gasoline has fallen 6.4 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.02 per gallon on Oct. 13 — a 13.7-cent decrease per gallon from a month ago and 14.4 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering more than 150,000 gas stations across the country.
According to Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, Americans could see the national average price of gas drop below $3 per gallon for the first time in years.
What has driven the change in gas prices?
De Haan attributed the drop in average prices to a seasonal decline in the use of gasoline, since Americans drive less in the fall, as well as the transition back to cheaper winter gas.
Gas prices have periodically dropped below the $3 per gallon national average, but the national average price of gasoline is expected to stay below the $3 price, marking the first time on a longer-term basis that it will have dropped to that level since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, he said.
The biggest wild card factor in the price drop is due to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries increasing oil supply almost every month this year, De Haan said.
“It’s pushed prices lower — U.S. oil production is slightly higher than last year,” he said. “OPEC has really churned output. Production has risen since March, pushing down oil and gas prices.”
Other wild cards may soon come into play, including a potential trade war between China and the U.S. that could push prices down further.
De Haan predicted that gas prices would be marginally lower than they were in the winter of 2024 due to the increase in oil production.
