LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The main story is about a prolonged and dangerous stretch of heat as an unusually strong area of high pressure builds over the Southern Plains. Temperatures expected to push well into the triple-digits.

This will not be a one-day event. Wednesday and Thursday will bring highs near 100 to 103 degrees. Additional, heat advisories will likely be needed.
Dangerous daytime heating builds through the week(KCBD)
Friday through Sunday could be the most dangerous portion of the heat wave. There’s a chance some areas may reach the criteria for an excessive heat warning.
The warm nights are especially concerning. Overnight temperatures may only fall into the middle 70s to around 80s.
Low temperatures not dropping much which makes this stretch of heat particularly dangerous for those without AC and certain populations.(KCBD)
Normally, nighttime gives the body, buildings, and outdoor surfaces a chance to release heat. When temperatures remain elevated, the body has less opportunity to cool and recover before another extremely hot day begins.
That allows heat stress to build over several days, especially for people without reliable air conditioning. Older adults, young children, outdoor workers, and people with certain health conditions face a greater risk.
