Construction is underway to widen Farm-to-Market Road 549 between State Highway 276 and State Highway 205, with the project expected to be completed by Jan. 31, 2029.

As part of the project, the intersection of FM 549 and FM 1139 will be realigned to a 90-degree angle to improve visibility and safety for motorists, according to project information.

The redesign is intended to improve sight distance for drivers on both roadways. Vehicles stopped at the FM 1139 stop sign and waiting to turn onto FM 549 will no longer need to look over their shoulders to check for eastbound traffic.

Once construction is complete, transportation officials said a traffic signal study may be requested to determine whether the intersection meets warrants for a signal.

The new roadway configuration also will change travel patterns for some motorists.

Drivers traveling from FM 1139 toward northbound SH 205 will turn left onto FM 549, continue to the signalized intersection at SH 205 and then turn right. Officials said the traffic flow will be similar to intersections along FM 740 in Heath and Rockwall.

According to 2024 traffic counts, FM 740 carries two to three times more traffic than FM 549.

Motorists traveling south on SH 205 to FM 1139 will use the new traffic signal at the SH 205/FM 549 intersection to make a protected left turn onto FM 549 before turning right onto FM 1139.
