LAS VEGAS — The Dallas Mavericks took care of some housekeeping duties ahead of their preseason finale in Las Vegas.

On Thursday evening, the Mavericks announced that they agreed to a multi-year extension with Kidd. This marks the second extension Kidd has received with the franchise as he enters his fifth season as head coach.

Kidd’s extension was first reported by NBA insider Marc Stein.

The number of years and salary figures were not immediately available.

“J-Kidd’s basketball resume is one of the best in the game, and through every situation he has proven he’s the right person to lead the Mavericks,” Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison said in a statement. “He has a track record of developing some of the best talent in the league, as well as the ability to connect with players to bring out the best version of themselves. J is the perfect head coach to lead this team to championship contention now and for years to come.”

Kidd has led the Mavericks for four seasons, originally taking over as the team’s head coach in 2021. He has guided the Mavericks to a 179-149 record, taking the franchise to the Western Conference Finals twice.

Kidd’s latest extension comes after he notably drew interest from the New York Knicks for their head coaching gig over the offseason. The Mavericks denied the Knicks’ request to interview Kidd and New York ultimately went with Mike Brown for their head coaching vacancy.

With Jalen Brunson as New York’s franchise player, the rationale was apparent why the organization pursued Kidd, who also spent his final season in the NBA playing for the Knicks in 2012-13.

While his status may have appeared murky, Mavericks general manager gave clarity to the situation at the conclusion of the first night of the NBA draft.

“Are there rumors out there about J-Kidd?” Harrison said. “I thought I shut those down. Yes, he will be the head coach next year.”

The longterm outlook for Kidd is clear. He will remain in Dallas for the foreseeable future.

“I’m grateful for the belief that Patrick and Nico have in me, and the trust we’ve built while working together to construct a team that Dallas can be proud of,” Kidd said in a statement. “We have a great group of players here who love basketball, are talented and coachable. There’s mutual respect across all departments, and Patrick and Nico set the tone for what we are trying to accomplish here. It’s even more special that I can continue to coach the team that drafted me, and where I was able to win a title as a player. I’m looking forward to what’s ahead and continuing to work toward bringing another championship back to Dallas.”
