Last week, Texas football sacked Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia six times and hung 34 points on the Commodores — a season-high.
A few hours later, the Oklahoma Sooners rode an outstanding defensive performance to a landmark victory over Tennessee in Knoxville.

Both of last week’s swing games contested by ranked teams went the way of the SEC’s two newcomers. The Longhorns and Sooners, both considered long shots to be nationally relevant at times this season, used big wins to firmly establish themselves as members of the race for a spot in the College Football Playoff and, perhaps, even a place in the SEC championship game in Atlanta.
A big-time shakeup in our SEC power rankings reflects their statement wins.

In explaining the College Football Playoff selection committee’s decision to place Texas A&M at No. 3 on Tuesday night, committee chair Mack Rhoades got Marcel Reed’s name wrong. The Aggies and their quarterback have an opportunity down the stretch to ensure nobody forgets who they are ever again. Two wins from solidifying a playoff spot with a manageable slate ahead, it would take a massive collapse for Texas A&M to miss out on the postseason party.

2. Alabama
The Crimson Tide is riding a seven-game winning streak that includes a stretch of four consecutive games against ranked teams, but there are still some tricky games remaining on the slate. A talented LSU team with an interim coach is up next, followed by an Oklahoma team that just won on the road at Tennessee. Alabama looks like one of the nation’s most complete teams, and it will need to continue playing like one if it hopes to end up in Atlanta for the SEC title game.

Kirby Smart knows that this iteration of his Georgia team has flaws. But, as he put it two weeks ago, the Bulldogs are “hard to kill.” They illustrated that quality again with a fourth-quarter comeback victory over Florida on Saturday. Georgia doesn’t always play like a national championship contender, but it almost always wins anyway. Does that signal that these Bulldogs are too flawed to win anything notable, or that they’ve got the mentality required to win big games despite their shortcomings? Time will tell.

Last season, the Rebels emptied their NIL coffers and signed an ambitious transfer portal class in an effort to go all-in behind senior quarterback Jaxson Dart. It didn’t work. This year, Dart is showing out in the NFL, and Ole Miss is likely two wins away from its first-ever playoff appearance, with Trinidad Chambliss, a Ferris State transfer, leading the way at quarterback. College football doesn’t always make sense, and that’s why we love it.

It’s been a long climb back to the top tier of the SEC for the Longhorns, and they haven’t looked like a truly elite team on every rung of the ladder. But they did Saturday, opening up a 24-point advantage over Vanderbilt before taking their foot off the gas in the fourth quarter. If Arch Manning performs like he did against the Commodores every week, Texas will be playing deep into January.

The Sooners need explosive plays from their defense to win big games, and they got one from Owen Heinecke, who forced a fumble that R. Mason Thomas returned 77 yards for a touchdown. That was one of three turnovers generated by Brent Venables’ defense against Tennessee, arguably the top offense in the country.

The Commodores were down 10-0 by the time they ran their fifth play from scrimmage against Texas, knocking them out of the slow, grind-it-out game they’ve used to frustrate more talented opposition. Diego Pavia and Eli Stowers delivered, but nobody else played particularly well in Vandy’s second loss of the season. There’s now no margin for error left if the Commodores want to realize their CFP dreams.

Eliah Drinkwitz has had two weeks to get his true freshman quarterback, Matt Zollers, ready following a long-term injury suffered by quarterback Beau Pribula. The Volunteers are fun. What they’ve done to turn last-minute transfer addition Joey Aguilar into one of the most productive quarterbacks in the country is remarkable. But the SEC is unforgiving, especially when you don’t play defense. Tennessee has given up at least 30 points in all six of its SEC games this season, and that’s why it won’t be going to the College Football Playoff.

LSU now has a new university president in place as it looks toward hiring a replacement for fired head coach Brian Kelly. The Gators got a red-zone turnover and benefited from a middling offensive performance by Georgia last week, but a 2-for-11 showing on third down ultimately doomed them. A 50-50 refereeing decision on a crunch-time deep ball to J. Michael Sturdivant didn’t help, either. Florida is good enough to compete against the league’s elite. Consistently, it just doesn’t get over the line. It’s hard not to wonder what this collection of players might achieve with a top-level coach.

For the first time since 2023, the Bulldogs claimed an SEC win.
