London ISD students returned to class as Acting Superintendent Amanda Barmore began the school year and addressed the statewide cellphone ban.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Summer break has ended for at least two school districts in the Coastal Bend. Last week, the Tuloso-Midway Independent School District welcomed students back to the classroom. Today, it was London ISD that opened its classroom doors to a new academic school year.
London ISD is also saying hello to its new leader. Acting Superintendent Amanda Barmore was appointed to the role this week. Dr. Bill Chapman announced his retirement, set for June 30. He will, however, stay on as a district employee until August 31.

Barmore has worked in the district for 15 years and said families should expect a normal start to the school year.
“Everything is going to be just the same as normal. We had a great meet the teachers for all the campuses this week,” said Barmore.
It was earlier this week when students got their first opportunity to meet their teachers. Campuses across the district will focus on helping students settle in. Barmore says intensive classroom work will likely begin next week.
Barmore also took time to address the statewide cellphone ban in public schools.
“Whenever the student is arriving at school, they have to have their cellphones off and in their backpacks, out of sight, and then they’ll be able to turn them back on after school is over,” said Barmore.
