The world’s elite women breakaway ropers are heading to Will Rogers Coliseum to compete for the World Champion title.

FORT WORTH, Texas — The crowning jewel of women’s professional rodeo breakaway roping is moving to North Texas.

The Women’s Professional Rodeo Association and the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo announced a new three-year agreement to bring the Wrangler WPRA National Breakaway Finals to the newly remodeled Will Rogers Coliseum on Dec. 18-19.

Formerly known as the National Finals Breakaway Roping and held in Las Vegas, the championship event features the world’s elite athletes. The WPRA National Breakaway Finals is the only event in the world where professional breakaway ropers can earn the title of World Champion Breakaway Roper. The top 15 competitors at the end of the regular season on Sept. 30 will qualify to contend for the title.

Leaders from both organizations expressed excitement about bringing the championship to Fort Worth.

“With the overwhelming response we saw last year, we feel moving to a larger venue in Fort Worth will allow this event to continue to grow and evolve for the foreseeable future for our contestants and fans alike,” said Heidi Schmidt, WPRA President.

Fort Worth has a rich history of supporting women’s sports, including hosting the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament at Dickies Arena and serving as home to the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame. The FWSSR previously won the 2020 WPRA Breakaway Trailblazer Year-End Award for adding women’s breakaway roping to its rodeo with equal prize money.

“Hosting these high-caliber WPRA athletes brings another top-tier competitive event to Fort Worth where we enthusiastically celebrate the Western way of life,” said FWSSR Rodeo Director Cal White. “The Will Rogers Coliseum is a perfect venue for Western sports thus we’re excited about this new partnership to draw greater attention to breakaway roping and continue highlighting these amazing women.”

Wrangler will continue serving as the title sponsor, maintaining a role it has held since the championship’s inception in 2020.
