After technical difficulties reportedly saw some 70mm IMAX screenings of The Odyssey in San Antonio cut short and canceled, the theater with one of two special projectors in Texas says things are up and running again. Here’s what moviegoers should know.
Last week, moviegoer Gabriela Reyes told MySA her showing only lasted two minutes before the system was said to have overheated and stopped, resulting in a refund. Three years ago, similar issues happened at the theater during Oppenheimer showings. Others shared Reyes’ experience, and many were sent emails ahead of their showtime bearing news of canceled screenings. What came next was days of speculation over when the rare and fragile projector — one of only 25 in the country — would be fixed.
Now, here’s your chance to see the movie in its largest format. A spokesperson for AMC told MySA in an email that AMC Rivercenter 11 has resumed 70mm IMAX screenings of The Odyssey as today’s 2 p.m. showing. Tickets are available online and are likely to sell out fast.
“Prior to the film’s release, the IMAX 70mm projection system underwent extensive testing and performed as expected,” the spokesperson said. “While the IMAX 70mm projector continued to operate as intended, a technical issue affecting supporting equipment required repairs, which have now been completed. We sincerely apologize to everyone whose plans were disrupted and appreciate the patience and understanding of our guests as our teams worked to resolve the issue. We are pleased to once again offer audiences the IMAX 70mm experience of THE ODYSSEY at AMC Rivercenter 11.”
The spokesperson said a scheduled IT systems transition will see the theater closed on Tuesday, July 28, and Wednesday, July 29. However, it is expected to reopen on Thursday in time for the premiere of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and will resume showings of Nolan’s epic upon reopening.
